The permanent collections are also worth a look, especially Chris Burden’s Urban Light (a photogenic work by Chris Burden) and Renzo Piano’s Broad Contemporary Art Museum.
Get lost in the complex curves of Richard Serra’s Band or become hypnotized by Metropolis II, an installation that features 200 downsized skyscrapers and buildings surrounded by a humming, kinetic tangle of toy cars.
The Getty Center
The Getty Center, a museum complex on a hilltop, features impressive art exhibits and architecture. Designed by architect Richard Meier, the museum attracts visitors from across the world.
A must-see is Van Gogh’s Irises, housed in the West Pavilion. Be sure to also check out the Fran & Ray Stark Sculpture Garden. The Central Courtyard and Exhibition Pavilion are worth a visit as well.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History (LACNM)
The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History is the largest natural history museum in the western United States. The museum has a wide range of exhibits, including two huge halls with animal dioramas that may be familiar to visitors from their appearances in films. The museum also hosts pop-up labs in which visitors learn about minerals and gemstones, or explore local wildlife in the Nature Gardens and Insect Zoo.
The Los Angeles County Museum of African American History and Culture
This museum offers enriching educational programs that explore art, history and culture of African Americans. The campus has three exhibition galleries as well as a theater, sculpture court, and conference center.
Black American Portraits is a curated exhibit from the permanent collection of the museum. It reframes portraiture by putting Black subjects, sitters and spaces at its center. The exhibition also challenges a culture of visual demonization that vilifies Blackness through a celebration of love, abundance and family.
California Science Center
Exposition Park is home to The California Science Center, a Smithsonian Affiliate that features dazzling edu-tainment. The museum’s IMAX Theatre immerses movie-goers into breath-taking sights and sounds while they explore African wildlife or dive under the sea.
The California Science Center offers free admission. The California Science Center is free to enter, but special exhibits such as Endeavour require timed entry tickets.
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, one of the largest museums of the Western United States, is located in Los Angeles. Dinosaurs and ancient sea life are on display in the Dinosaur Hall. Africa and North American Mammal Dioramas can be found, as well as a Nature Lab which explores LA Wildlife.
Kids will love exploring 4 1/2 billion years of history. Check out the Butterfly Pavilion, Spider Pavilion, and special exhibitions.
